The natural sponge (Hippospongia equina) is a simple life form found in all oceans, from the Caribbean to the Arctic. Its function in the ocean is to act as a natural filter. It pumps water through its body to feed on plankton and other tiny food particles.
There are more than 7,500 different species of natural sponges, ranging in size from a few millimetres to about three metres. Depending on water temperature, depth and current, natural sponges take between six months and five years to grow.
